Beyond Hampton

Beyond Hampton

The UCAS and Careers Department is dedicated to ensuring every Hamptonian can make the best, informed choices for their lives beyond Hampton. While vast majority of Hampton boys progress to university, advice is also given on a range of options including Degree Apprenticeships. No matter what direction in life you decide to take, we will help you achieve your goal.

The Team

The six-strong UCAS and Careers Team comprises Mr Wilkinson (Assistant Head); Mrs White (i/c Oxbridge applications); Mrs May (i/c overseas university applications); Mrs Mullan (i/c Degree Apprenticeships); Mrs Ciechanowicz (i/c Careers); and Mr Walden (i/c data

From First Year upwards, the Hampton School UCAS and Careers Department offers extensive support and guidance to ensure that each pupil has a thorough understanding of opportunities in education, training and employment, and the skills necessary to make informed decisions. The Careers programme includes the offer of internal interviews with individual pupils at key decision-making times; and advice and guidance is offered from staff and external professionals.

Lower School

In the lower school regular careers lessons form part of the PSHE programme; but as boys move up the school, they will be made aware of various work experience opportunities, both virtual and in-person, run by external providers for which they can apply. First Year pupils are introduced to the Careers programme in the summer term. Second Year boys undertake a Career Investigator programme to give them some early ideas.

Middle School

Third Year pupils are given advice and guidance when choosing their GCSE subjects, and can opt to have a one-on-one meeting with a member of the UCAS and Careers team. At the end of the summer term we hold our annual Creative Careers afternoon for the Third Year where pupils hear from professionals from a wide range of creative backgrounds; in recent years, participants have included publishing, journalism, events management, architecture, music production, podcasting, documentary-making and film VFX.

Fifth Year

All Fifth Years take the Unifrog careers aptitude tests and have follow-up interviews with their Form Tutor and a member of the UCAS and Careers team if they wish. Every pupil’s suite of A level courses is checked by a group including members of the UCAS and Careers team to check its internal coherence and whether it best supports the pupil’s university aspirations. Pupils and parents may at any time make an appointment to discuss future plans with the careers staff or Head of Year.

The School holds an annual Careers Week in the spring term which enables pupils and their parents to consult experts from many professions and organisations. This is held via MS Teams: each evening during the week there are three sessions, each focusing on a different career area; this year, sessions included Law, Medicine, Finance, the Civil Service and Computer Science amongst others. Sessions involve a panel of career leaders drawn from our Alumni community and parent body and elsewhere. Pupils are also able to visit the LEH Careers Convention, and through the Unifrog platform can also access their virtual careers fair.

The Hampton Network

Alumni regularly return to Hampton to offer guidance and share their expertise. The School enjoys close contact with its Alumni network and these links offer boys the opportunity for work experience and internships before they proceed to degree courses.

Sixth Form

Applying to University

The UCAS process for university application begins in the spring term of the Lower Sixth, which is also when the Oxbridge process begins. Boys are introduced to the UCAS Hub and set up an account so that they can begin their research well before the UCAS form application opens in May. Pupils also make good use of the excellent Unifrog platform which has a number of invaluable tools to help them in the process of deciding which course to take and which universities they will apply to.

Oxbridge Applications

Pupils interested in applying to Oxford or Cambridge are given help and advice over college choice and have dedicated time in the autumn term for preparation for any admissions tests which they may have to sit in October.

Higher Education Evening

This is held in the first week of the Lower Sixth summer term and is an opportunity for parents to find out more about the process of university application. Every pupil and their parents are offered a UCAS Parents’ Meeting where they are able to discuss university options with a member of the UCAS team, SLT, Head of Department or another senior member of staff. The Lower Sixth are also taken off-timetable for a Personal Statement morning in the second half of the summer term, where pupils are introduced the UCAS Personal Statement and given specialist subject-specific advice.

International Applications

Every year we have a number of pupils who choose to study abroad, most commonly in the USA and Canada, but also at European universities. Hampton employs specialist external input to support boys for entrance to American Universities, and a member of the UCAS team specialises in overseas applications.
