Hampton has a thriving Music Society, which supports and enhances the School’s well-deserved reputation for musical excellence and diversity. Hampton School Music Society (HSMS) assists and enables the Music Department in a variety of ways, from music events to supporting Hamptonians on their musical journey. The support we give is guided by the HSMS Mission Statement: Unlock the Musician Within.
The funds generated through events and member subscriptions support many musical initiatives, such as the highly prestigious biennial Voices of Lions trip to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, support for the Sinfonia Orchestra, and the well-received ‘Rare Beast’ programme, which provides access to unusual instruments and a scholarship scheme.
Throughout the academic year we also contribute to the running of a multitude of concerts and events such as the annual St Cecilia’s Concert, the Christmas Concerts, Jazz Café, and many more.
The Music Society awards Lower and Upper School Music Cups each year for service to the Music Department. Recipients will have made a significant contribution both in academic music and as performers in the many ensembles and choirs. Without exception, our award winners have gone above and beyond the normal expectations in fostering and promoting musical life and achievement throughout the School.
Membership of the Music Society is made up of parents of Hamptonians throughout the School and is not limited to parents of pupils who study and/or perform music at Hampton. Nor do members have to be musicians themselves; what is important is an appreciation of how music can enrich people’s lives, and a desire to support the support pupils at Hampton as they expand their musical horizons. HSMS has a committee made up mainly of Hampton parents, which meets twice a term. We are particularly keen to find new HSMS Committee members who have boys in the Lower School to provide continuity for the future.
Volunteering to help at events or becoming a committee member is hugely enjoyable. It will also give you an insight into musical life at Hampton and will of course support the Music Department and pupils. There is the added bonus of being able to meet fellow parents from across the School.
As a member of the HSMS, you will receive reminders and early notice of ticket sales for musical events. There is also a regular newsletter with photos and reviews to keep you up to date with the wide variety of performances that take place at Hampton. Occasional social events are also arranged. It is a great way to play a part in the musical life at Hampton.
We are always keen to welcome new members to the Hampton School Music Society. Please join us at one of our meetings, or contact the Membership Secretary for more information.
