Last week’s big event was Hampton’s annual Open Morning – we welcomed visitors from far and wide to show them what we have to offer. Many boys worked in departments and others acted as guides to prospective Hamptonians. Here, Zebedee and Adithya explain what their roles were on the day:
On the 24 of September 2016, we started Open Morning. What seemed to be a daunting task turned out to be a fun one. I started the day with Luca Boucher (2P) demonstrating the iPads to parents. After an hour, we switched around and started giving out menus and sheets at the door of the continental café. It was really exciting that we got a chance to show the school to parents. The highlight for me was showing them the iPads as they can look very confusing at first! Zebedee Aylin -2P
I really enjoyed Open Morning. It was great experience for me as I knew the school much better than last year and helping the parents was fun. I hope to have the same responsibility next year. Adithya Arvind – 2P
Open Morning didn’t prevent the teams from hitting the pitches – the rugby teams headed to Colet Court and the footballers hosted Glyn. Many thanks to the boys who have brought us these reports:
The rugby A team match on Saturday the 24th September was a great fixture against an amazing school. The score line unfortunately didn’t go our way; we lost 50-0. Colet Court played amazingly throughout the game and they definitely deserved the win. Our first half wasn’t great, we didn’t seem to have the ball most of the time, but after an inspiring team talk from our captain Tom Ketel (2P), we picked up our game and towards the end we got closer and closer to a try, but it didn’t happen. I feel proud of our team’s improvement towards the end of the match. Hopefully in our next game we will play like we did in the second half and maybe even get our first win of the year! Max Broughton – 2W
On the 24th Saturday, Hampton School U13Bs Rugby took on Colet Court. We played a great first half with Alex Lloyd (2B) scoring a hat trick, pushing us into the lead. After a quick team talk and a chance to grab some water, we began the second half. Sadly we couldn’t continue in the same style and with Colet Court putting on a whole fresh new team, they managed to overtake us. Although we lost we played well as a team and can’t wait for our next game. Oliver Glenn – 2W
On the 24th of September Hampton School under 13As played against Glyn School. It was an aggressive affair with the referee having to get involved on several occasions. Unfortunately, a long ball over the top unleashed the Glyn striker who put away neatly in the corner. Then due to good football Hampton were awarded a penalty, which was expertly put away by Alex Dinan (2L). After the break Glyn managed to get a few goals in the net but more good football gave Hampton another penalty scored by Alex Dinan (2L) again. As Hampton heads dropped more goals were conceded making the final score 8-2 to Glyn. Arthur Bothamley – 2W
At the weekend the U13Bs were playing a football match against Glyn, a tough opposition. Unfortunately we came out on the wrong side of the score-line losing 8-1 in a tricky match for us. Although we lost, our goalkeeper, Zak Dyer (2J), pulled off some amazing saves. We did get the final say in the match though, when Freddie Seddon (2L) put a corner into the penalty box and Thomas de Gruchy (2W) knocked it in. Fergus MacEacharn – 2W
Many boys threw themselves into sporting events beyond the local pitches. We are lucky enough to hear from Conor Bleach (2W), Alex Bush and Quentin Duff (2H) who bring us their latest news:
At the weekend, like I do every weekend, I went to my climbing club, but this week, I was being assessed in a competition. There was a buzz of people everywhere – it was really exciting. When it finally came to my group, I tried to stay calm and do my best. The routes were tough, and it was a race against the others, but I managed to finish in decent time. When the results came through, I was third – not too bad. It was a great opportunity and I really enjoyed it. I can only hope I will do more in the future. Conor Bleach – 2W
On Sunday, the 18th of September, 16 Hampton Boys competed in a ski race in Welwyn Garden City at U14 and U16 level. We all had to arrive at 9:30 so it was an early start. Luckily Ms Latulipe had got there early and pitched the Hampton tent. We received our racing bibs and then we did our practice run. At around 11:30 the first Hampton boy went (it happened to be me) and I posted a decent time of just over 14 seconds. The other Second Years were Quentin Duff (2H) and Isaac Mann (2P), who also posted good times. We then got to race the course a second time, all trying to beat our previous times. We then cheered on the U16 team. As the competition came to a close, we left having been satisfied with the morning’s skiing. Thank you to Miss Latulipe, Miss Byrne and Mr Walsh. Alex Bush – 2H
At Monday break time we headed over to the snow centre in Hemel Hempstead, an indoor ski centre. We got ready for the race and went to the top of the slope, waiting anxiously. We competed with many other schools and all completed the slope well. Luckily no one fell over! Well done to Sam Schomberg (Third Year) who came second in his age group, and we all left the event very pleased with ourselves. Quentin Duff – 2H
Sounds like snow much fun!
Here Jake Costen tells us about a very special day out:
On Monday the 27th of September, the boys of the Chapel Royal Hampton Court Palace went by coach to Windsor Castle to perform a concert to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. We rehearsed for most of the afternoon with the choirs of: St George’s Chapel Windsor, the Queen’s Chapel of the Savoy, and Her Majesty’s choir of St James’ Palace. At 7:30 we presented a concert (to his Royal Highness Prince Edward and an audience of about 500 people!) in St George’s Chapel. The concert lasted until 9:30, and afterwards we were rushed off stage to meet Prince Edward! He congratulated us on how nice the concert sounded. We all enjoyed it, especially because we were singing Judith Weir’s anthem “Praise him with trumpets” which was composed specially for the Hampton Court Palace choir. We got home very late and were very tired on the next school day! Jake Costen – 2P
And the boys continue to keep themselves busy at lunchtimes with a range of exciting activities. This week Alex Mehta (2L) tells us about Science Club:
In Science Club we have been handling the snake in Biology called Max, she was originally thought to be a boy… hence the name. We held her and learnt about what the snakes eat and how to take care of her. Alex Mehta – 2L
Boys can find out more about Science Club by consulting the poster in their form room or by speaking to their Science teachers. Future workshops include: bouncy custard balls, grow your own mushrooms, slime (!!) and building a home for worms!
Let’s wrap up or blog by congratulating those boys who have made it to the ten-merit milestone: Nayaaz Hashim (2H) and Ben Francis (2L) deserve a hearty round of applause. Well done, boys.
