Rowers raise money for charity
Pupils and parents from Hampton School and The Lady Eleanor Holles School (LEH) Rowing Communities have raised over £35000 in aid of the Shooting Star Chase Children’s Hospice.
Around 90 girls and boys from the two schools, and 20 parents, took part in an 80 mile sponsored row from Oxford to Hampton over the weekend. The charity event was organised by parents of the Hampton and LEH Boat Club, the HHBCA.
Taking to the water at 6.30am the Eights and Quads navigated through 28 locks along the eighty mile stretch of the River Thames. On Saturday, the crews made it to Henley, before boating again the following morning for the final stretch to the Hampton and LEH Boat House.
Rowers in the final boats enjoyed a torchlight paddle, arriving back at the Boat House just before 9pm.
Director of Rowing at Hampton, Mr Colin Greenaway, warmly thanked all who helped to organise and run the event.
I am incredibly proud of all the boys, girls and parents who took part in the sponsored river row. Rowing 81 miles of the Thames is a tough challenge for anyone and all our oarsmen and women showed remarkable spirit and good humour throughout.
To have raised this much money for such an important local charity is a marvellous achievement. It is fundamental to the our School ethos to encourage our pupils children to play their part in the wider community and to serve others, so the row was an ideal way to demonstrate this. I would like to thank the Environment Agency, staff and parents who helped throughout the weekend and also the various Boat Clubs who hosted us along the route.
