Over 600 pupils, alumni, parents and staff made the journey to Stoke City FC for what proved to be an unforgettable English Schools’ Football Association (ESFA) Finals Day – a celebration of football and the shared spirit of the Hampton community. A sea of black and yellow filled the stands as supporters gathered to cheer on the First and Second XI footballers who had reached the prestigious national finals.
The day began in spectacular fashion for the Second XI, who faced Thomas Telford School in a fiercely competitive final. Playing with composure, determination and real attacking intent, Hampton were rewarded with a well-taken equaliser from Finlay M after Thomas Telford had taken an early lead, setting up a tense, high-quality encounter. Hampton’s character shone through and, urged on by a passionate support from the crowd, the Second XI found another gear – creating chances and applying pressure before Freddie T secured a decisive second goal in the closing minutes of the match. The final whistle sparked scenes of jubilation, as the 2–1 victory confirmed Hampton as national champions of the U18 Schools’ Cup for B teams for the second consecutive year.
The First XI then took to the pitch for a high-intensity final against Samuel Whitbread Academy. This was a Hampton side that had overcome nine rounds of competition to stand as one of the last two teams remaining from an original field of 352 schools across the UK. Despite a strong performance and relentless commitment throughout, Hampton were ultimately defeated 3–1. While the result did not go their way, their run to the final stands as one of the School’s most impressive footballing achievements in recent years and a campaign that will inspire future Hampton sides.
Finals Day crowned what has been an excellent year for Hampton football. Alongside the ESFA success, the First XI were crowned HUDL National Champions for the first time in the School’s history – a phenomenal achievement underlining the strength and depth of the programme.

Equally memorable was the enthusiastic and unstinting support from the sidelines. Pupils, alumni, parents and staff created an atmosphere that lifted both teams and captured the spirit of the day — and one that will be remembered long after the final whistle.
Director of Football, Mr David Burke, was immensely proud of both teams:
Thank you to everyone who made the journey to Stoke City FC and helped make ESFA Finals Day such a memorable occasion for our School community. The encouragement from the stands was a reflection of our ‘one team mentality’ approach, and its impact was clear to see.
we are incredibly proud of our footballers. reaching both ESFA finals in the same year is a huge achievement, as is securing consecutive national titles for the Second XI.
What makes this success particularly special is the way our players consistently demonstrate our sporting values on the pitch, and act as role models for our younger pupils. The achievement is a culmination of seven years of development within the football programme, involving the dedication and commitment of many members of staff.
