Hampton’s first-ever Chamber Music Day brought a vibrant new addition to the School’s musical calendar, offering pupils an inspiring opportunity to explore the richness of small-ensemble performance, while benefitting from expert coaching and a shared passion for chamber music.

The day showcased the depth of talent within the Music department and celebrated the collaborative spirit at the heart of chamber performance. Two acclaimed guest adjudicators joined the event: internationally renowned violinist Nicole Wilson and distinguished clarinettist Anna Hashimoto, both of whom offered insightful feedback throughout the day’s rehearsals and performances.

A wonderfully diverse array of ensembles took part, showcasing the breadth of chamber music at Hampton.

Groups included a Flute and Harp Trio, Guitar Ensemble, Lower String Ensemble, Brass Quintet, Trombone Ensemble, Piano Quartets, Wind Quintet, Clarinet Ensemble, String Quartets and a String Quintet, among many others. Each ensemble performed for the visiting musicians and benefitted from focused coaching sessions, during which pupils explored interpretation, technique, ensemble communication, and stylistic awareness.

The atmosphere throughout the day was one of creativity, with pupils demonstrating impressive musical maturity and enthusiasm. Each group rose to the occasion magnificently, and the feedback and encouragement offered by Nicole and Anna made for a truly enriching experience for all involved. The adjudicators praised the high standard of playing and the pupils’ willingness to challenge themselves musically.

The event concluded with a wonderful evening concert showcasing all of our chamber groups, and our young musicians had the chance to share their hard work and musical achievements with a wider audience. It was a fitting and joyful finale, celebrating the variety and vitality of chamber music at Hampton.

Mr Daniel Roland, Director of Music, was delighted with the success of the day:

To hold our first ever internal Chamber Music Festival was really exciting, and the buzz around the department was infectious. The talent on display throughout the day and in the evening concert was overwhelmingly good, and the Chamber Music at Hampton is certainly the strongest I have known it for a long time, with more than 19 groups!
