A group of 20 Third Year Hamptonians embarked on a cultural adventure to Lübeck, the historic North German town celebrated as the Queen of the Hanseatic League. During the festive season, Lübeck’s UNESCO-listed Old Town is transformed into a winter wonderland, adorned with twinkling lights and the enticing aromas of traditional delicacies – an atmosphere the linguists were able to soak up as they strolled through the bustling Christmas markets and explored the city’s charming streets.
The trip offered pupils the perfect opportunity to immerse themselves in German language and culture. As well as browsing the famous Christmas markets for seasonal gifts, Hamptonians explored the city’s iconic landmarks, including its seven spires, medieval fortifications, and working harbour. Highlights included visits to the fascinating European Hansemuseum and the Holstentor Museum, both offering insights into Lübeck’s rich maritime heritage.
No visit to Lübeck would be complete without sampling its culinary treasures, and pupils delighted in tasting the world-renowned Lübeck marzipan and muzen, a traditional regional doughnut. The trip was a memorable blend of festive cheer, cultural discovery, and linguistic enrichment.
