Welcome to our Kindertransport awareness raising project.
The Kindertransport was a rescue effort that took place just before the Second World War. Between 1938 and 1939, around 10,000 Jewish children were sent from Nazi-controlled areas to safety in Britain. Many of these children travelled alone, leaving behind their families, most of whom they never saw again.
Despite its significance, awareness of the Kindertransport remains really low today. We are working on a special project to change that—researching stories, creating resources, and sharing what they learn to ensure this chapter of history is not forgotten.
To find out more about the Kindertransport we were keen to speak to a leading historian. We were privileged to speak with Dr Amy Williams, an expert on the Kindertransport. Please view our interview with Dr Williams below.
We were also thought it was really important to find out about the experiences of the individual children who came to this country to flee Nazism. We were lucky enough to talk to fifty of the children and relatives of the Kinder. We’ve created a display of the posters that we made – each one featuring one of the children who came to Britain on the Kindertransport, those who helped them or the places that they stayed in when they arrived.

We have also been very fortunate to have Kurt Marx, who came to Britain on the Kindertransport, visit us and speak to more than four hundred Hamptonians.

Kurt is a member of the Association of Jewish Refugees. We were lucky enough to speak about our project at a conference they held recently.
We think it is important to spread the message about what happened across the country. We have written to schools located close to where each of the fifty kinder we researched were sent in Britain. We hope that each of these schools will learn even more about the Kindertransport because of our research.
Our school discovered that there was a Kinderhostel in our local town a few years ago. Please take a look at the video that Hamptonians made about the Lebanon Park Kinderhostel.
We would like to thank everyone who has helped us with our project so far. If you would like to know more about our work please contact Mr Lawrence.
