The Hampton Model United Nations (MUN) team kicked off the academic year in impressive style at the first conference of the debating season — REIMUN — held at Reigate Grammar School.

MUN gives young debaters the chance to step into the shoes of global diplomats, representing countries in simulated UN committees to debate and resolve major world issues. Twenty Hamptonians represented three delegations — Sweden, India, and Russia — tackling a wide range of global issues with enthusiasm and maturity. Taking on the role of Russia proved a particularly challenging assignment given current world events, but our delegates rose to the challenge superbly, debating with confidence and diplomacy throughout the day.

Adding to Hampton’s presence at the conference were three experienced Upper Sixth pupils — Xavier, Noah, and Felix — who took on guest chairing duties for the very first time. All three relished the opportunity and are already looking forward to chairing again at LEHMUN later in the year. The standard of debate at REIMUN was exceptional, with thought-provoking topics discussed and impressively researched speeches presented — our delegates delivered well-informed and articulate contributions across all committees.

A special mention goes to Lower Sixth Hamptonian Basil, who represented Russia on the Historical Security Council and earned a well-deserved Best Delegate award for his performance in debates on the Falklands conflict and the 1990 Gulf Crisis.

The MUN Club at Hampton is thriving, with attendance at lunchtime sessions reaching an all-time high of 75 pupils — a fantastic sign of growing interest and enthusiasm for international affairs. The team now looks ahead to their next challenge — the London Oratory School Conference in November — where Hamptonians will once again put their diplomatic and debating skills to the test.
