Hampton’s Drama Department delivered another unforgettable performance with a riotous and imaginative take on The Hound of the Baskervilles in this year’s Lower School Summer Show. From the opening scene to the final curtain, the production was packed with energy, creativity, and laugh-out-loud moments that had the audience thoroughly entertained.

The rehearsal process was clearly a joy for all involved, and this infectious enthusiasm translated brilliantly to the stage. Every pupil looked like they were having lots of fun – none more so than Watson, who brought the house down with his manic mission across the moor, dispatching a series of animal puppets in increasingly dramatic and absurd fashion.

One of the evening’s many highlights was the ensemble’s ingenious creation of Sherlock Holmes’ “Head Office” mind palace. Using a collection of unconventional placards and slick choreography, they brought Holmes’ inner thoughts to life with flair and humour. The actor playing Holmes delivered a memorable performance – particularly when startled by a sudden sound effect, prompting an impromptu moment of comfort music. Olivia Rodrigo may never sound the same again for those in attendance, thanks to a hilarious floor routine from Teddy that left the audience in stitches.

Behind the scenes, the technical crew were just as impressive. Pupils took the lead on lighting and sound design, with the Deputy Stage Manager even developing a bespoke app to run the show – an extraordinary example of innovation and dedication. The Lower School Summer Show was a true celebration of pupil-led creativity, teamwork, and theatrical flair. Bravo to all involved!

Drama teacher and Director of the Show, Miss Beth Tiller, congratulated the cast and crew for a fantastic production:

The Hound of the Baskervilles was such an enjoyable production right from the first auditions to the final performances. The cast of First and Second Year Hamptonians tackled an ambitious, fast paced comedy script with the energy and confidence of professional actors! Every single performer on the stage (and behind it!) made me very proud and I can’t wait to see what these young actors do next.

Audience members were equally impressed, with one commenting:

The performance was an absolute delight – full of originality, sharp direction, and impressive attention to detail. The set design and costumes were fantastic, adding so much atmosphere to the show, and the clever staging choices made the story come alive in unexpected and often hilarious ways.

It was also a joy to see how much humour was woven into the production – something that not only made the performance highly entertaining, but also helps nurture self-awareness and a healthy sense of irony in the boys.

The pupils gave incredibly strong performances, speaking clearly and confidently, with the presence and poise of professional actors. The stage movement was equally well-rehearsed and dynamic – a real testament to the work put in by both the cast and your team.
