The Hammond Theatre was filled with music, energy and applause as Hampton School’s talented musicians took to the stage for the Summer Concert – the final event of a superb year of music. The evening showcased the breadth and depth of musical talent across the School, with performances ranging from classical masterpieces to contemporary favourites.

The evening began with a vibrant performance in the Cloisters from the Jazz Band and HOODs, winners of this year’s Battle of the Bands, which set the tone for a superb evening of music. Inside the Hammond Theatre, Consort of Voices opened the concert with a moving rendition of Tavener’s Mother of God, Here I Stand. This was followed by a lively set from the Swing Band, which including a spirited performance of Birdland and a collaborative arrangement of Sway, which showcased the arranging talents of Fourth Year Hamptonians.

The Percussion Ensemble brought drama and flair with their interpretation of In the Hall of the Mountain King, while the Chamber Choir delivered a beautifully blended performance of Rutter’s The Heavenly Aeroplane. The Sinfonia performed a playful rendition of The Syncopated Clock, while Hampton’s exceptional male-voice choir, Voices of Lions, entertained an appreciative Hammond Theatre audience with The Mamas and the Papas classic California Dreamin’.

After a brief interval, which featured a pop-up performance by the Trombone Ensemble in the Cloisters, the concert resumed with the Symphony Orchestra delivering a powerful and emotive performance of The Butterfly Lovers, featuring soloist Upper Sixth Former Yangzi Tjoe on violin, who played the complicated concerto with aplomb. The orchestra also performed a stirring arrangement of Bridge Over Troubled Water with a note-perfect performance from vocal soloist Hugo Knowles. The concert concluded with a majestic rendition of Tchaikovsky’s Valse from The Sleeping Beauty Suite. A wonderful evening of music topping off a phenomenal year for Hampton’s musicians and choristers.

Mr Daniel Roland, Director of Music, praised everyone on stage:

Once again, Hampton musicians absolutely blew us away with their talent, enthusiasm and professionalism. This year’s Summer Concert was up there as one of these best I have known in my time at Hampton. Every single performance was polished and at such a high standard. My colleagues and I are incredibly proud of all our young musicians – thank you all for your loyalty and commitment. We are so grateful for all you do!
