Hamptonians studying Religious Studies and Philosophy for GCSE and A Level enjoyed a memorable trip to the ‘Eternal City’ of Rome. The visit was an excellent opportunity to deepen their understanding of Christian theology and philosophy, during one of the most significant periods in the Roman Catholic calendar.

On day one of the trip, pupils visited the Catacombs of Domitilla before enjoying a fascinating guided tour of the Vatican. In the evening they headed to the iconic Trevi Fountain where everyone enjoyed a tasty gelato, soaking up the vibrant Italian culture. Holy Saturday saw Hamptonians explore the historical wonders of the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum before embarking on a guided walking tour of the city, taking in sights such as the Pantheon, Piazza de Fiori and Piazza Navona. Some of the pupils attended the Easter Vigil service, remaining thoughtful and engaged during the solemn celebration.

The highlight of the trip was being present in St Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday to witness Pope Francis deliver his final papal address. This significant event marked the Pope’s last public appearance, and the Hamptonians joined thousands of people from around the world for the Urbi et Orbi – the Pope’s Easter message and blessing.
