Hampton School’s exceptional youth male-voice choir, Voices of Lions, have been impressing audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival since 2013 and this year was no exception.
The 39-stong choir, featuring Hamptonians from Third Year to Upper Sixth alongside recent leavers, performed to record audiences at Old St Paul’s Church in Edinburgh. There were many highlights from the five performance across the week, including an emotional rendition of the Simon & Garfunkel classic Bridge Over Troubled Water with a superb solo from James Bantick, a powerful performance of Nearer My God To Thee featuring a note-perfect solo from Johnny Evans-Hutchison, alongside a range of numbers from The Beatles timeless classic Here Comes the Sun to a toe-tapping rendition of Aladdin’s Friend Like Me. Audience members were impressed by the seamless transition between heartfelt, classical numbers and the contemporary, upbeat songs which are always a feature of Voices of Lions’ performances.
While many performers at the Fringe hire others to publicise their shows, members of the Voices of Lions were a constant sight on the Royal Mile, handing out black and gold flyers to publicise their performances. This proved very worthwhile, as the final show attracted a record audience in excess of 200. The choir were complemented on the energy, enthusiasm and commitment they displayed on the Royal Mile, as they went out to sell their show.
Director of Music, Mr Daniel Roland, was delighted with how the Hamptonians embraced the opportunity to perform at this year’s Fringe Festival:
Something that I will never forget about this particular trip is the sense of camaraderie among such a large group of pupils in different year groups who share a love of music. The enthusiasm, dedication and sense of pride I witnessed throughout this trip was admirable and made the whole thing such a joy to run.
