Over 100 pupils from local secondary schools came together for Genocide Awareness Day 2019. The schoolchildren were joined by three Genocide survivors who gave inspirational and powerful testimonies about their experiences.
Zigi Shipper, a survivor of Auschwitz-Birkenau during the Second World War, was joined by Kemal Pervanic who was imprisoned in the notorious Omarska concentration camp in Bosnia and Sophie Masereka, a survivor of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. The pupils heard moving stories from some of the most difficult periods in history.
Following on from the survivor’s testimonies, the pupils took part in a series of workshops where they crafted animations, produced newspaper articles, wrote poetry and created artwork based on the often shocking experiences of Zigi, Kemal and Sophie.
The day culminated with each of the pupils designing a commemorative stone that will be placed within the foundations of the new Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre that is due to open next year.
