UCAS & Careers

The vast majority of Hampton boys progress to university, although advice is also given on a range of options including Degree Apprenticeships. From the First Year upwards, the Hampton School Careers Department offers extensive support and guidance to ensure that each pupil has a thorough understanding of opportunities in education, training and employment, and the skills necessary to make informed decisions.

The Careers programme includes the offer of internal interviews with individual pupils at key decision-making times. Advice and guidance is offered from careers staff and external professionals. Extensive information is also available to all pupils in the Careers Room.

First Year boys are introduced to the Careers programme in the Summer Term. Second Year boys undertake a Career Investigator programme to give them some early ideas. Third Year boys are given help in choosing their GCSEs and offered the opportunity of an individual interview with a member of the careers staff.

Boys and parents may at any time make an appointment to discuss future plans with the careers staff or Head of Year. All Fifth Years take the ‘Morrisby’ careers aptitude tests and are offered interviews with external specialists.

The Careers Library is easy to use and up-to-date. Old Hamptonians regularly return to Hampton to offer guidance and share their expertise. Each year a Careers Convention, hosted jointly with The Lady Eleanor Holles School, enables boys and their parents to consult experts from many professions and organisations. Hampton also host a Gap Year Fair run by Inspiring Futures who have worked for many years in offering career opportunities, courses and taster sessions.

The School enjoys close contact with its Alumni network and these links offer boys the opportunity for work experience and internships before they proceed to degree courses. A popular Careers Lunch programme brings in a range of Old Hamptonians to be interviewed on Hampton Radio and to meet boys in an informal setting.

The University process includes talks from major universities, access to Unifrog – a cutting edge software package to encourage the pupils to learn as much as possible about their future decisions, as well as a host of UCAS dop-in clinics and parents’ evenings, including the Higher Education Evening which introduces parents to the application process.

Hampton also prepares boys for entrance to American Universities using a specialist provider of SAT tuition.
