The Hampton Extended Learning Project (HELP) is a programme of extended learning open to Hamptonians in the Second Year and above.
HELP aims to foster a love of learning, where pupils can pursue their academic passions free of curriculum and examination constraints. A pupil completing a HELP project pairs with a teacher supervisor who guides them through the process, providing useful mentoring on a one-to-one basis throughout the research and project-writing process. This gives pupils an invaluable opportunity to develop research, communication, and organisational skills. The only pre-requisite for completing a HELP project is that the topic must be genuinely outside the curriculum.
There are four levels of HELP: Level 1 – Second Year, Level 2 – Third Year, Level 3 – Fourth/Fifth Year, Level 4 – Sixth Form.
Prizes were awarded for the following Level 3 and 4 projects:
- ‘To what extent is a badger cull necessary in controlling Bovine Tuberculosis in England?’
- Sustainable Development in Nigeria: Assessing Present Challenges and Future Potential
- Disapproval Voting – What Electoral Reform Could Look Like
- Clive Wearing: Living in the Eternal Present
- What am I, who knows?
- Using Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning Techniques for Data Extraction and Reading Comprehension
- Will Classical Chess Die Out?
- To what extent does the application of joint criminal enterprise liability differ between domestic and international criminal cases?
- Would the universe exist if there was nothing around to observe it?
Dr James Flanagan, Assistant Head and HELP Coordinator, congratulated the pupils on their achievement:
The opportunity for pupils to work on an academic project on a one-to-one basis with a teacher over an extended period of time is something that makes Hampton’s Extended Learning Project so distinctive. Every year, a wonderfully diverse range of Hamptonians’ academic interests are revealed through HELP and I’m grateful to the dozens of teachers that support Hamptonians in pursuing these passions.
