Hampton’s debaters excelled with an impressive haul of awards at Haileybury Model United Nations (MUN), one of the biggest conferences of the year.
Fifteen Hamptonians from across the year groups competed at Haileybury MUN (HMUN), representing the delegations of Thailand, the Netherlands and Cambodia. HMUN is the largest and most prestigious conference of the academic year, and features not only UK pupils but schools from as far afield as Europe and the USA.
Some of the topical issues under scrutiny included improving the monitoring and management of natural disasters, strengthening the coordination of humanitarian assistance, the choice of women to wear a hijab and the deportation of refugees. Hampton also sent a delegate to the historical committee, representing the Kingdom of Siam in a simulation of the 1919 Paris Peace Conference.
The following Hamptonians received awards:
Vishal Saha – distinguished delegate for Cambodia on the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee
Sam Trotman – distinguished delegate for Thailand on the Disarmament and International Security Committee
Isaac Crowhurst – highly commended delegate for Cambodia on the Ecology & Environment Committee
Felix Von der Geest – highly commended delegate for Thailand on the Ecology & Environment Committee
Theo Elliott – highly commended delegate for Cambodia on the Human Rights Committee
Leander Koutsoudis-Bhuller – highly commended delegate for The Netherlands on the Human Rights Committee
The delegation of Cambodia also won a highly coveted distinguished delegation award.
Well done to all the young debaters who competed at this year’s HMUN. Particular congratulations must go to Third Year pupil Leander Koutsoudis-Bhuller and Fourth Year Hamptonian Sam Trotman on winning individual awards in committees filled with experienced Sixth Form pupils.
