Our 204 Fifth Year boys have achieved record-breaking I/GCSE results for a fifth consecutive year. Hamptonians have excelled in rising to the challenge of reformed GCSE courses and the new 9-1 grading system that now applies in most subjects.
Highlights of the day
- 74% of grades at I/GCSE at 9-8/A*
- A remarkable 61 boys achieve a clean sweep of top grades
- Hamptonians achieve a total of 55% grade 9s in seven reformed GCSE subjects
- 93% of all results are at grade 9-7/A*- A (national average of 20.5%)
This year, Hampton pupils received numerical grades across seven subjects and achieved a remarkable 55% at the new top 9 grade. 82% of results in these subjects were at 8/9 which equates to an A*.
A remarkable total of 61 boys achieved a clean sweep of top grades (A*, 9 or 8) and a further 43 achieved straight A*/9 grades.
Hampton’s traditionally outstanding results in the STEM subjects continued, including an outstanding 128 grade 9s in Chemistry. Similar success was enjoyed in modern languages: over 90% of grades in Spanish, French and German were at A*/A;100% of Russian and Mandarin results were at A*/ A. English Literature and English Language results were also particularly excellent, with over 95% A*-A grades in both.
Among those achieving a clean sweep of top grades today was Matthieu Hildreth, who secured 11 A*/9 grades.
Twins, Benjamin and Max Au-Yeung notched up 20 9/8/A* grades between them. Collecting his results alongside his brother, Max said they were delighted by their exceptional results:
“It was a very pleasant surprise and we are both thrilled. We are looking forward to celebrating with our friends and family.”
Koby Kalavannan, who is currently representing England at the European Youth Chess Championships, rounded off a fantastic summer with a full house of 10 top grades. Koby, who was named a FIDE Chess Master earlier this year, won the U18 British Chess Championship title in July.
There were top marks too for Alex Fagan, winner of a 2018 Creative Writing Award, and Newsquest 2018 Young Reporter Henry Sheen.
Among Hampton’s Fifth Year musicians celebrating today were Trumpeter Adam Wood, aspiring rock star Max Elliott, and pianist Stephon Umashangar, who all achieved a perfect set of top A*,9 grades.
Our sportsmen also enjoyed exceptional results. Among those with top grades were English Schools’ Athletics finalist Sam Southall, Middlesex Cross Country representative Pavit Kullar and 1st XI cricketer, and Surrey Academy player, Rahul Desai.

Our Fifth Year boys deserve the highest praise for achieving these exceptional, record-breaking results. It is all the more impressive that they have been so conspicuously successful in the context of reformed GCSE courses in many subjects and the much-publicised challenges associated with the rigorous new 9-1 grading system. 55% grade 9s is a phenomenal outcome in the new examinations.
These talented young men can approach their Sixth Form studies with confidence and I am sure they will continue to combine academic excellence with enriching all-round involvement in School life, something which happily remains such a distinctive feature of a Hampton education. Congratulations to our boys, parents and staff on a magnificent collective effort!
