Welcome to the Second Year Bulletin!

MERIT MILESTONES

Well done to Ishaan D (2B) and James A (2H) who have already reached ten merits this term. What a tremendous effort. Make sure you are getting your merits signed off by Mrs Owen – we hope to feature you in this section next week!

SPORT

After the first full weekend of fixtures, we are kicking off this week with a special focus on sports reports. First let’s see if the rugby players could get over the line in their first competitive outings:

U13A: The team played well by scoring a quick two tries in the first ten minutes putting us in a comfortable lead. By the second half our performance levels had dropped allowing John Fisher School to score to bring the game to 15-10 with us in the lead, we fought hard and in the end we came out on top with the win with a 10 point gap. Finlay W (2W)

U13B: On Saturday, it was the U13B game against St. John’s School, the final score was 20-20 but they lost four players. Nevertheless, our team performed very well at tackling and getting over the ball. Ethan F (2W)

Well done boys. And what of the footballers? First, let’s hear from Ben M-J (2W) as to whether the B team could maintain their perfect start to the season:

U13B: Hampton were ready to compete in their second match of the season against Glyn. Unfortunately, after about ten minutes of some well-played football Glyn won a free kick right on the edge of the box. They scored by lifting the ball over the front post man’s head. About ten minutes later Glyn scored again. At half time the score was 2-0 to Glyn. The second half kicked off soon after and Glyn school scored again inside 5 minutes. It would be hard for Hampton to come back from three goals down. Luckily, about 10 minutes later Saganan won a penalty and Dan excellently scored from the spot. One excellent goal by Saganan T (2P) later changed the score line to 3-2 to Glyn. Magnificently, with five minutes to go, Saganan scored again with three minutes to go. At the tied score both teams tried really hard to find another goal but the game ended at 3-3.

That fixture sounds like an absolute belter. Well done on a fine come back. The A team were victorious against Glyn at the weekend and then had to follow that up with a cup fixture on Monday. Toby N (2W) tells us how they got on against Charter School:

A great performance from Hampton in the first half scoring five goals. Chibby N (2H) scored a hat trick and Jamie scored two. In the second half we only managed to score one with Jago P (2J) getting the goal, but we didn’t concede. Throughout the whole match, the defence played solidly only letting the opposition have one shot that went off target. Overall, the team played really well and we are through to the next round of the ESFA cup.

Hurray!

The ski team have been keeping their powder dry until now but this week they sloped off to Welwyn. Ben Z (2H) tells us if it was all downhill:

On Sunday 16th September, six Hampton teams of four boys travelled to the ESSKIA national qualifier at the dry ski slope at Welwyn Garden City. Some boys were competing for the first and it was a great learning experience for them but other members of the team are experienced racers. We look forward to more races next year.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Next week, I am particularly on the lookout for reports of what you’ve been up to at the various co-curricular clubs and activities so please send me in a brief report and earn yourself a merit in the process. Here is an excellent report from Matthew B (2J) to get the ball rolling:

Every Thursday at 1pm in Room 56, Ms O’ Connor runs Psychology Club for Second Years. In our first session, we talked about dreams and how they work and what people’s opinions are on dreams and how you get them. In the second session, we took a look into the brain and what different parts of it do. It is really fun and I recommend coming along. Next session we are discussing the topic ‘Do animals have feelings?’

TRIVIA & JOKES

A merit for the first correct answers I receive. This week, can you tell me what is the only country you can make from the letters on a single row of a standard QWERTY keyboard? And if you manage that, what about also telling me the only US state you can make in the same way.

Joke of the Week:

Some excellent entries this week. The panel has gone for Sam S’ (2H) effort:

I got hit round the head with a pillow …
I think I got concushion

Have a great week!
