Hamptonians debate global issues
In the last weekend of the Spring Term, ten boys from Hampton travelled to Haileybury school in Hertfordshire to take part in the UK’s largest and most prestigious Model United Nations (MUN) conference. This event features not only UK schools but schools from as far afield as continental Europe, the USA and Middle East.
In true MUN fashion, a wide host of topical issues were debated and solutions were proposed to tackle some of the most troubling global problems. These included drug-trafficking in South-East Asia, multilateral intervention in Syria and the question surrounding unauthorised encroachment on nations’ airspace, to name but a few.
Hampton boys, who took part in multiple committees including political, human rights and economic social, were acting as the delegations of Nicaragua and Sri Lanka.
Congratulations are also in order to the following three boys who were successful in achieving awards: Joe Spicer for receiving highly-commended delegate and James McGhee and Alfie Watkins for outstanding delegates.
Accompanying teacher, Mr Haig Agulian, was impressed with how the boys performed over the course of the weekend:
“MUN truly holds testament to what can be achieved in such international contexts – all boys who participated in the MUN events not only showed a great degree of commitment and ardour with their debating endeavours but also gained an invaluable opportunity to develop essential oratory skills as well as their diplomacy.”
