A very warm welcome to the Summer Term. We have an extremely busy term ahead of us, packed full of trips, activities, concerts, plays and sports fixtures. By the time we break up for the holidays in July, some of the boys will have bartered for croissants and baguettes in northern France, some will have engaged in high-adrenalin exploits on a coasteering course in Dorset, and all will have visited the Globe Theatre, explored a gurdwara, mosque and synagogue and learnt the basics of stage combat. The life of a First Year is nothing if not eclectic!
Some of our Rugby players kept themselves busy over Easter on a tour to the Netherlands. James Bantick, Sam Davidson, Fraser Dunlop, Tomasz Findlater, Ben Freer, Oliver Glenn, Huw Harris, Arthur Hopley, Thomas Ketel, Ethan Knight, Jack Pearce, Ben Settle, Thomas Simm, Sam Skinner, Ollie Stokes, Theo Wedge, Ben Wharton and Ben Wix played two matches, winning one and losing one. Two tries from Ollie Stokes, one apiece for Ethan Knight and James Bantick, and a conversion from Thomas Ketel, saw RC Hilversum defeated 22-14, whilst Ethan scored the only try in a 25-5 loss to RC’t Gooi.
We have some individual literary success to celebrate, with Alexander Upshall being Highly Commended for a book review he submitted as part of Cover Story, a competition run for school children by Richmond Borough Libraries. Of over 500 entries, many from older pupils, Alexander was one of just ten prize winners. Hampton Librarian Mr Hemsley tells me he has been helping boys enter this competition for 5 years, and this is the first time that we have had a winner. Many congratulations, Alexander!
The good weather this week has perhaps convinced boys that the attractions of spending their lunchtimes on the 3G or the fields outweighs those of visiting my office to sign off merits, but I am delighted to announce our first certificate of the term: well done to Nayaaz Hashim, who has now accrued 110 merits.
Let me offer my best wishes to all the boys for the term ahead – it is hard to believe it will be their final one as First Years. I am sure they will throw themselves into the challenges in a characteristically enthusiastic and positive manner, and that they will continue to impress as a result.
